Where: ONLINE via ZOOM

OPEN TO ALL INSTRUCTORS and NON-INSTRUCTORS seeking application points.

In this course you will discover the four foundational cornerstones for successfully dealing with “Annoying People” utilizing the DISC personality concepts to become more aware of how you are naturally wired and how this can help you grow as an instructor, as well as how it can hold you back.

How to Deal with Annoying People is divided into four primary areas of focus: Perspective, Awareness, Expectations and Communication.

Perspective: This section provides insight on the importance of recognizing that our students’ perspectives are different from our own as instructors. Developing the skill of gaining perspective will help instructors grow and refine their patience when teaching in the classroom and on-line, when dealing with administrators and when interacting with fellow instructors. In particular, developing the skill of expanding perspective will help instructors be more patient and understanding with several barriers that students routinely face such as low digital literacy, poor time management skills and lack of organization. The course includes an interactive exercise that strongly reiterates the important role perspective plays in our interaction with students and peers in the classroom.

Awareness: This segment provides an in-depth education on how to identify each of the four behavior styles based on observation. After the training session, instructors will be able to analyze and anticipate different learning styles using a heightened sense of awareness. With this skill, instructors will be able to diversify their content delivery methods and engagement activities to ensure they are connecting with and engaging with students of all four behavior styles. Also, instructors will be able to better anticipate student behavior and/or reactions and handle conflicts more easily.

Expectations: Built on the skills developed in the Perspective and Awareness sections, this section of course teaches instructors how to realign their expectation of themselves as instructors as well as their expectations of their students. Being able to update our expectations will translate directly into giving ourselves the freedom and confidence to adjust our curriculum, teaching methods and content and materials without the cloud of “this is the way we’ve always done it” hanging over the classroom. Learning to monitor and change our expectations translates into more engaging classroom and on-line instructional time for our students.

Communication: The final segment of the course focuses on teaching instructors how to frame effective questions to facilitate more complete and efficient communication with students and peers. This unit will also cover the specific do’s and don’ts of asking useful questions based on the student’s behavior style. During the segment the class will participate in interactive communication exercises that give the instructors practice with effectively listening as well as asking more powerful questions.

More About Cynthia Matheny

As a Certified Master Behavior Analyst, Cynthia Matheny has been working directly with entrepreneurs, business owners, and sales professionals to transform their business since 2010.

Prior to understanding and valuing people for how they are wired differently, Cynthia found herself frustrated, annoyed and judgmental of others who didn’t think, act or respond the same way she did. After her profound realization “Not everyone thinks like I do”, her perspective shifted and she unlocked an insatiable desire to learn more about how to value people for the way they’re naturally wired, rather than judging them for being different.

Cynthia's mission is to help leaders and entrepreneurs conquer their challenges, empower their people, and create lasting impact through understanding the power of personality and perspective.
